President Donald Trump said late Friday that he should have received eight Nobel Peace Prizes, repeating a disputed claim that he settled eight wars, and fumed that awarding South African jurist Navi Pillay had cast an "indelible stain on Norway."
The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored Pillay, 85, "for her efforts to promote peace and international law." She served on the Rwanda genocide tribunal and the International Criminal Court, and led a UN commission that accused Israel of genocide in Gaza. The Nobel Committee called Pillay “one of the most respected international jurists of our time.”
The Committee is appointed by the Norwegian parliament, but works independently of the government.
In a tirade posted just before midnight, Trump said "Radical Ideologues" had "forever discredited" the Nobel Peace Prize.
“I know nothing about this woman, and neither does anyone else!” wrote Trump. “In fact, to the best of my knowledge, no one ever heard of her other than the fact that she, very obviously, hates Israel. I don't know what the woman has done.”
In his post, Trump listed the conflicts he claims to have resolved — Cambodia-Thailand, Kosovo-Serbia, Congo-Rwanda, Pakistan-India, Israel-Iran, Egypt-Ethiopia, Armenia-Azerbaijan and Israel-Hamas — among a litany of other supposed achievements relating to peace.
But several of those settlement claims are disputed or unresolved, or involve conflicts that were not wars in the usual sense. Some of the conflicts resumed soon after Trump took credit for solving them.
Trump also complained that he “should have won 8 Nobel Peace Prizes, not just 1” — a reference to an effort in 2025 by winner María Corina Machado to concede her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump. Early last year, the president wrote on social media that Machado had "presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize."
The Nobel Institute says a prize "cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others."
Later that year, Trump was awarded the inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize” as a consolation.
Trump has previously claimed to have resolved eight wars, but in Friday’s post, he alluded to other even more tenuous claims about his peace-making efforts.
“I am also preventing, on a constant basis, a War between South Korea and North Korea, and Japan and North Korea. Add China and Taiwan, and numerous other hot spots, which have not been involved in Wars, only because of President Donald J. Trump,” he wrote.
“On top of it all, I have created a soon to be very prosperous Arctic,” he added.
